From the Driver's Seat - June 2019

Published on 6/11/2019
I’ve always had a love affair with Porsche automobiles.

It was the mid ‘70s when I was a kid growing up in
the corn and soybean fields of central Illinois when I became enamored with a 911 Turbo “whale tail.” The sheer thought of a car so different than a regular V8 front-engine rear-wheel drive American car sounded so exotic to me; this skinny kid in the Midwest that was driving a 1953 Willy’s CJ3B Jeep as his first car. Sure we had 914s running around town ... and VW’s ... some Fiats ... and even Lancias ... but not a Porsche like that!

I got to ride as a passenger once in a mid-60’s 911.
I was just around driving age. It was the parent’s of a friend of a friend, so I didn’t get the chance to get behind the wheel. Drat.

Then, when the 928 came out in the late ‘70s, I fell truly, madly in love. Those lay flat pop-up headlights, oval
slotted mags, that wrap around dash with cocoon like interior ... and that wild, crazy kaleidoscope black and white interior in a Signal Red car ... WOW! You know, to this day I cringe when Joel dunks his father’s 928 into Lake Michigan in the classic movie Risky Business.

Unfortunately, the first Porsche I drove was an ’87 944. It was pre-owned; a friend in Peoria asked me to test drive it for him since the car was for sale in Springfield, where I lived. Fortunately, it was a stick; unfortunately, it was a very malaise era of performance (even for Porsche), so I wasn’t impressed with its inability to live up to an exhilarating sports car experience. Based upon my recommendation, my friend did not purchase the car.

So when I read Frank Markus’ feature article in this issue, I can only imagine what it’s like to be behind
the wheel of such impressive cars. I picture myself riding shotgun with Frank through the twisty roads of Sardinia. Damn that would be soooo fun! Until I get the chance to drive impressive Porsches someday, I’ll live vicariously through Frank’s driving experiences with these and other unique cars as he shares them with all of us in the Driveshaft.

Enjoy your summer ... keep your cars out of Lake
Michigan ... and happy motoring, wherever your travels take you!
