From the Driver's Seat - Aug 2018

Published on 8/9/2018

Whenever I get behind the wheel of one of my vintage cars, I take pride that I am a restorer and preservationist of automotive history.  I have two survivor cars; the others were restored because they needed it!

We are in this hobby because we all love what a car or truck of any vintage embodies to us. It may be we have a childhood connection to a certain make, model or year of car, that we greatly admire the style, the innovative engineering that it took to create the vehicle, how it makes us feel, etc. Whatever it may be that drives us to own a vehicle, we are stewards of human transportation history.

When Detroit last hosted the Grand Invitational in 2010, LCCI members featured a tour of local area cemeteries where noted auto industry giants found their final resting places. We saw Henry Ford’s gravesite at his former church grounds, as well as the Dodge Brothers’ rather monumental mausoleum with stained glass windows to David Dunbar Buick’s rather modest granite tombstone.

Of special note was the grave marker of Hupmobile founder Robert “Bobby” Hupp. Known for their innovation and then contemporary styling, Hupmobiles were admired by Henry Ford. Hupp’s cars brought technical and engineering advances to the industry, including introducing all-steel bodies (one of two companies at that time) and fresh air heaters and early air conditioners. Noted designer Raymond Loewy (before his time with Studebaker) penned beautiful art deco streamline designed Hupmobiles in the early 1930s. Gorgeous.

But like all great makes that left us, including Studebaker, Packard, Nash, Mercury and Pontiac, Hupmobiles finally disappeared, the last one in 1939 thanks to a tough Depression, lawsuits, corporate in-fighting, hostile     takeovers,      stockholder    fights, delayed models and bad marketing practices.

However, what is inspiring is the love some club members have for the marque, yours truly included. Check out the great feature article in this issue regarding club member Wm. David Romani’s beautiful 1930 Hupmobile. Understand how important that car is to our common history and to him personally. I hope that you, too, can find pride in David’s love and passion as caretaker of that car, and in the passion for automotive history that makes our club so great.
